How Can Mushrooms Help You Achieve Your 2018 Goals?

How Can Mushrooms Help You Achieve Your 2018 Goals?

    Hello 2018!

It seems that last year rushed by faster than I could check goals off my list. I’m setting out to make this year a different story.

As I typically spend most of the day sitting and working, my new year’s goals are most commonly ones that involve hitting the gym, building up strength and so on.

One of my goals this year is to start 4 out of 7 days with yoga.

    Sounds nice right?

Well I had myself rethinking the whole plan when 6 am rolled around. I needed something to get me out of my housecoat and into the yoga flow.

That is why I have been starting every day with Cordyceps in my tea/or coffee.  Cordyceps is an adaptogen and increases energy naturally by improving oxygen utilization in the body. Cordyceps also increase levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body’s main energy supply.

Hero2 has been a great addition to my morning routine, and I am finding it much easier to roll out of bed and onto the mat.

Another huge goal for me is to read more books.

If I have a choice between the movie version or the book, hands down –I’ll watch the movie.  It has always been a challenge to dedicate time everyday to fully finish a book.  As soon as I start reading, my mind wanders far from the pages of the book.

I have been using Lion’s Mane mushroom extract to increase my focus and help bring my mind back to the pages of the book. Lion’s Mane is a nootropic and stimulates nerve growth factor, helping to maintain neurons.  (I’m one full book down already, woo-hoo to mushroom power.)

What are you goals for 2018?

Boost Your Energy Naturally by "Adapting" to Stress

Boost Your Energy Naturally by "Adapting" to Stress

    Just Tired?

I often hear people commenting on how tired they are.  Is it the cumulative effect of late nights and stressful days, the depletion of nutrients in our food, or a weakened immune system and just generally being run down?

With the exception of the obvious (drink more water, get more sleep, decrease stress, strike a pose, check in with your doc..) how can you gain that extra boost of energy naturally?

Consuming copious amounts of caffeine can leave you feeling jittery and scrambled and energy drinks can make your heart race.

So where does that leave us?

    Adaptogens for Energy

Ever heard of adaptogens? Adaptogens are substances that help your body adapt to stress, both mentally and physically. These substances will help to improve energy, stamina, endurance, strength and mental clarity.

One adaptogen that we love for improving energy is the Cordyceps militaris mushroom. These mushrooms have been used for thousands of years to improve energy and vitality, and are currently used to treat a whole slew of health issues.

Cordyceps increase energy by improving oxygen utilization in the body, which in turn helps to prevent disease. Cordyceps also increase levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the bodies main energy supply.

Other adaptogens that will help you enhance your energy include Ashwagandha, Rhodiola and Schisandra. These adaptogens have health protective effects that decrease stress and boost energy.

After you take care of the basics (water and sleep!) it makes sense to try and improve how you feel on a daily basis by adding some adaptogens to your diet.

Make Some Mushroom Magic With Turmeric and Golden Milk

Make Some Mushroom Magic With Turmeric and Golden Milk

Cold winter days got you feeling uhhg?  This is the time of year where you can find me curled up on the couch with a hot drink and a book.  My new hot obsession is golden milk, also known as turmeric tea.  Turmeric has been studied for its many benefits including; anti-inflammatory, antioxidant properties, relieves arthritis pain, eases symptoms of depression and builds heart health.

Golden milk is easy to whip up from scratch, or for those trying to save a few minutes you can prepare turmeric paste to have on hand.  Turmeric paste can also be added to other recipes (soup, yogurt, stir fry) or just eat it by the spoonful.

Check out some of my favorite recipes for each of these methods below!

These recipes include two ingredients that you do not want to leave out; black pepper and coconut oil (or other healthy oil).

Black pepper massively increases the absorption of the turmeric.  The absorption of turmeric is also aided by fat, making coconut oil a good choice. Coconut oil is also amazing for so many other reasons!

Golden Milk – Supercharged with Medicinal Mushrooms

    • 1 tsp turmeric powder
    • 1/2 tsp Thrive 6 powder
    • 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder
    • 1/2 tsp coconut oil
    • 1/4 tsp dried ginger powder
    • 1/4 tsp cardamom powder
    • 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
    • 2 cups coconut milk
    • Black pepper
    • Pinch of mineral salt
    • Raw honey (optional)

Here's what you do. (It's easy!):

    1. Mix all ingredients in a saucepan and gently heat over low heat.
    2. Whisk well or use a hand blender.
    3. Serve warm.

    Golden Milk Turmeric Paste

    • 1/2 cup turmeric powder
    • 1 tbsp Thrive 6 powder
    • 1 tsp cinnamon powder
    • 3/4 tsp dried ginger powder
    • 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
    • 1/2 tsp black pepper
    • 1/4 tsp mineral salt
    • 2 cups filtered water
    • 1/2 cup coconut oil (or ghee)
    • 1/3 cup raw honey (optional)

    Here's what you do:

    1. Over low/medium heat combine turmeric with water, bring to a very gentle simmer, stirring until a paste is formed.
    2. Combine ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper and sea salt.
    3. Once paste is formed add the mixed spices, continuing to stir, until mixture has become a thick paste.
    4. Remove from heat and add coconut oil and honey, stir until mixed.
    5. Pour into a clean jar. Let cool, mixture will thicken as it cools, then add lid. Shake to prevent separation. Store in the refrigerator for 2 weeks.
    6. For golden milk – heat 2 cups of coconut milk in a saucepan. Add 1tsp – 2tbsp and whisk or blend. Bring to a gentle simmer and then serve warm.

Golden milk is great to drink any time of the day. I especially enjoy it at night to help me wind down from busy stressful days. I hope you enjoy these recipes and they keep you cozy and comforted on these cold autumn days.

Made from Mushrooms? These Products Are the Future

I’m guessing you’re a huge fan of mushrooms because you know just how amazing they are for your health. And that alone is reason enough to be amazed at the world of fungi.

It’s true… the uses for mushrooms medicinal space are far reaching. (and they’re not bad in the kitchen either!)

But did you know that the mycelium that produces those beautiful medicinal fruiting bodies we consume can also be used in a sustainable way to create cool products we can use every day?

Let me tell ya, if you’re a mushroom lover like me, there are three innovative products that you NEED to check out.

    Mushroom Leather

Yes that’s right, sustainable, versatile, vegan leather.

Mycoworks has created a new kind of leather that strong, flexible and durable. This leather is water resistant yet breathable. They can grow the leather into any shape, size and texture while using only a fraction of the resources and time compared to animal based leather. Plus it’s gorgeous!

    Mushroom Furniture

Want to add a conversation piece to your home? Pick up some mushroom furniture. Stools, chairs, tables, light fixtures and plant pots are just some of the ways you can bring a sustainable piece of nature into your home. You can even order a kit and grow your own plant pots and light shades!

Mushroom mycelium is also being used as a building material, since when it is dried it becomes an ultra-strong, water, mould and fire-resistant building material.

The mycelium can be grown into almost any shape, it’s organic, sustainable, and when you’re done with it, fully compostable.

    Mushroom Packaging

Mushroom mycelium is a brilliant alternative to plastic packaging. Mycelium grows over agricultural waste to form high performing and competitively priced packaging. You can package nearly everything in this sustainable green material.

Large retails, like Dell and Crate & Barrel, are jumping on the innovative packaging band wagon to help reduce waste and toxins from other forms of packaging. Even IKEA has announced plans of packaging their furniture in mycelium. Myco packaging is a great alternative to petroleum-based foams that encourages better recycling practices and cuts down on a great deal of waste.

The mushroom revolution is not just for your health, but also for some of the products you use everyday!
